In the early 1920s, the farmland in the western part of Paris Township (now City of Kentwood) started to become more suburban in nature, with small tract housing being developed in the area for the first time. In 1923, the realty firm of Thomas and Cheesman purchased 80 acres of property on both the west and east sides of Division Avenue, naming the development, “Home Acres.”
Several commercial businesses were soon established along the corridor, including Home Acres Bank, Shippy’s Pharmacy and Robson’s Dry Goods Store, among others. These businesses served the large number of families moving into Paris Township, becoming one of the original suburban shopping centers in the region.
