Following the Michigan Supreme Court's decision stating that Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's actions were unconstitutional and an overreach of power, the Michigan Senate has decided to pass legislation to put protections in place for many frontline workers and others affected by COVID-19, according to MiSenateGOP.
Though the GOP-led portion of the state government was in favor of these protections, they felt it was important to make a stand against what turned out to be an abuse of power by the governor.
Now they are encouraging their colleagues across the aisle to work with them on solutions in a manner that is compliant with the Michigan Constitution.

Sen. Aric Nesbitt (R-Lawton) said, “As the coronavirus made its way across Michigan, my colleagues in both chambers of the Legislature pleaded with the governor to work with us to take on this pandemic together. Instead, the governor repeatedly chose to ignore input and go it alone. After the Supreme Court ruled Gov. Whitmer’s actions during the pandemic were unconstitutional, we’re giving her yet another chance to work with us to help those who have been affected by COVID-19.”
The bills will extend unemployment benefits and pass protections for senior living facilities as well.
