State Representative Angela Rigas (R-Caledonia) chaired a session of the House Oversight Subcommittee on Weaponization of State Government, where former Attorneys General Mike Cox and Bill Schuette provided testimony. Rigas expressed her gratitude for their insights, stating, “I’m grateful we were able to hear from two AGs that actually know their job description.”
The testimonies focused on the responsibilities of an attorney general in upholding the constitution and ensuring public safety. Schuette emphasized the importance of supporting fair justice and empowering law enforcement, remarking, “This really speaks to the issue of public safety.” He criticized any attorney general policies that might defund police or fail to enforce laws as "reckless and irresponsible behavior."
Current Attorney General Dana Nessel was discussed critically during the session. Rigas highlighted actions taken by Nessel during COVID-19 lockdowns against protestors and business owners who did not comply with mandates. Rigas shared her personal experience, stating, “In 2020, I was ticketed for a first amendment event and ultimately, our current attorney general tried stripping my professional business license for that.”
Cox criticized Nessel’s involvement in federal lawsuits against the Trump Administration, particularly one concerning probationary federal workers. He noted Michigan's own policy on probationary periods for state employees and questioned Nessel's decision to involve Michigan in such matters.
Additional topics included Nessel’s handling of the Flint Water Crisis and prosecution related to the 2020 Trump Electors. The subcommittee awaits a response from Nessel regarding a records request tied to these issues. Cox suggested that Nessel may be viewing legal matters through a political lens rather than a professional one.
“If you’re a Democrat or a Republican, you have to fear prosecutors who view things through a prism like that,” Cox stated.
Before adjourning, other subcommittee members had opportunities to ask questions. Rigas concluded by indicating ongoing work: “We heard some incredible testimony today,” she said. “I’m looking forward to receiving the documents we requested from Attorney General Nessel.”
