Watch out for “emergency” scams.
Recently, we’ve seen an increase in emergency scams. Someone calls or contacts you, saying they’re a family member or close friend and that they're in trouble. But check that there’s an emergency first because it could be a scammer calling.
People may call, saying they’re a child, grandchild, law officer, attorney or doctor. They may say that there’s an emergency with someone you care about.
Before you act, take a minute to stop, stay calm and try to contact trusted family members to verify what you’re being told. Contact police departments, jails, courts or hospitals to verify claims of arrests, warrants or hospitalizations.
Never give people who show up at your house money, money orders or gift cards. Call the police immediately.
