State Rep. Angela Rigas | Michigan House Republicans
State Representative Angela Rigas, representing Caledonia, joined her fellow House Republicans on Friday to call for action on reforms related to Michigan's tipped wage and paid sick leave laws. Rigas expressed dissatisfaction with the lack of progress by House Democrats.
"House Democrats had a clear opportunity to prevent devastating consequences for Michigan’s small businesses and hardworking employees, yet they chose to do nothing," stated Rigas. "By making this statement, we are sending a message that we will not stand by while political games take precedence over the livelihoods of Michiganders."
The focus of the dispute lies in proposed changes to these laws, which have been debated legally and legislatively. Without legislative intervention, businesses could encounter significant cost increases that might result in reduced hours, layoffs, or even closures for many small businesses dependent on tipped labor.
"Our small business owners, waitstaff, and hospitality workers deserve certainty and stability, not political stalling," said Rigas. "I stand with my Republican colleagues in demanding that House Democrats take responsibility and act now to protect the people we serve."
Republicans have urged bipartisan solutions to support Michigan's workforce while shielding small businesses from excessive financial burdens. They argue that Democratic leadership has failed to propose solutions despite extensive discussions and warnings.
