Caledonia Community Schools issued the following announcement on Feb 23.
Independent Studies at Caledonia High School are a great way for students to explore and dive into an in-depth study of a specific area beyond what a class might offer, or a topic that isn't offered as a full class option at CHS. Mr. Scholten has three students doing independent studies this semester in his shop spaces.
Senior James Eardley is continuing the first-semester Furniture Design class into the second semester by completing his table, which is shown here ready to have a finish applied. He will also be completing other projects for high school staff members with the rest of his time this semester.
Senior Ethan Knapp is doing an independent study on Auto Body where he is working on this bed from his '86 Chevy. Ethan has learned about sanding and prep work before applying this bedliner, as preparation for cleaning up the bedsides and tailgate and preparing them for paint.
Junior Joe Geglio is doing an independent study on 3D Modeling and Metal Fabrication. He designed this rear bumper for his truck and is working on assembling it, and will apply a finish in the future. He also plans to design and build a front bumper yet this semester.
All of these students had Mr. Scholten for at least one previous class and presented their Independent Study idea and semester plan to Mr. Scholten for approval by a CHS administrator.
Mr. Scholten says "It's great to see these students take ownership of their learning, and put extra time and effort into an area that is a passion for them.
