For Black History Month, we chose a certain number of African Americans to celebrate each school day of the month. Today, we are going off script because... did you see the Super Bowl Halftime Show?
Today we celebrate Andre Young AKA Dr. Dre. Dr. Dre grew up poor, moving around many different crime infested neighborhoods in South Central Los Angeles in the 70s and 80s, being raised mostly by his grandma. By 1986 he had been a member of several hip hop and R&B groups working as a DJ including The World Class Wrecking Crew and NWA. He eventually became a DJ, rapper, and producer for Death Row Records before breaking away and starting Aftermath Entertainment. Dre also created 'Beats by Dre' headphones and sold them to Apple for $3 Billion.
Sunday's Super Bowl Halftime Show was a culmination of Dr. Dre's career and further validated hip hop (not that it needed it) as part of pop culture. His current net worth is over $820 million.
Many think the American Dream is dead. Others think this is a concept only for the white, middle class. I think Dr. Dre personifies the American Dream.
