CITY OF WYOMING-CITY HALL: Wyoming Department Of Public Safety - Official Media Release

Letter editor 03

City Of Wyoming-City Hall issued the following announcement on Aug. 29.

At approximately 8:00am this morning Wyoming police officers were called to investigate a suspicious interaction between a group of Godfrey-Lee students and a subject driving a van. The students were walking on the public sidewalk and the van was backing out of a drive. There was a short non-confrontational interaction between the students and an occupant of the van over who was to transverse the sidewalk first.

During that interaction, an occupant of the van reportedly offered the students candy and a ride to school.

The students continued on their way without incident. We do not know with certainty the intent of the occupant but the matter remains under investigation. Exercising an abundance of caution, there will be an increased police presence in and around the district during transit times.

Importantly, Godfrey-Lee partners with the Wyoming Police by having a full time Wyoming police officer assigned to the district. Additionally, we continue to prioritize our “Every School, Every Day” program in which all on-duty patrol officers make daily visits to our more than 40 educational facilities in our jurisdiction.

We concur with the advice Superintendent Polston provided this morning in his communication to his students and families regarding walking to school:

• Walk in pairs or small groups

• Wear reflective clothing

• Walk on sidewalks and use pedestrian crosswalks

• When possible, report safe arrival to a loved one

• Be aware of your surroundings and don’t hesitate to call police if you see something or someone suspicious
