Michigan's response to the COVID-19 pandemic has had an unintended but detrimental impact on its small businesses, as they have suffered at a higher rate than those in other states in the nation.
A survey conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics indicates that the state of Michigan saw 32% of private-sector businesses closed by the government-ordered lockdowns, Michigan Capitol Confidential reported. The state of Pennsylvania was the next closest at 30%.
The survey also asked employers about what they have experienced due to the pandemic and how they have responded.
The national average for small businesses closures due to lockdown orders was recorded at almost 19%. The state of South Dakota, under Gov. Kristi Noem, has had the most success during the pandemic due to the fewest COVID-19 restrictions. It had the lowest percentage of businesses impacted during the pandemic at just under 6%, Michigan Capitol Confidential reported.
