State Representative Angela Rigas, a Republican from Alto, has been appointed to the newly established Select Committee on Protecting Michigan Employees and Small Businesses. This committee is set to tackle important issues related to Michigan's tip credit and paid sick time policies, which have been contentious topics among employees and small business owners in the state.

Rep. Rigas expressed her appreciation for the opportunity to contribute to this committee and thanked Speaker Matt Hall for assigning her this significant role.

"I am honored to be appointed to the Select Committee on Protecting Michigan Employees and Small Businesses," said Rep. Rigas. "Ensuring that our policies strike a balance between protecting employees and supporting the small businesses that drive our economy is essential for Michigan’s future. I am committed to working diligently alongside my colleagues to find solutions that preserve the tip credit system while addressing the needs of hardworking employees."

The current tip credit system in Michigan allows tipped workers, such as servers and bartenders, to earn a lower hourly wage supplemented by tips. Proposals aimed at eliminating this system have met with strong opposition from both workers who fear income loss and small business owners worried about rising operational costs. The select committee will address these concerns while also considering potential changes to paid sick time requirements.

Rep. Rigas highlighted the need for input from those directly affected by these policies. "Our system is not broken, but it does require thoughtful consideration and input from the people it impacts most. I look forward to engaging with stakeholders to ensure their concerns are heard and addressed."

With her background as an advocate for small businesses and working families, Rep. Rigas brings valuable experience and dedication to her new role on this select committee. Her involvement will be crucial in shaping policies that support Michigan's economic health while meeting workforce needs.
