PSA: The Kentwood Police Department wants residents to be aware of a phone scam in which the caller alleges to be a Kentwood police employee who claims to have a warrant for their arrest or is serving a subpoena and tells the individual to pay them in cash or with gift cards.

These calls are fraudulent. The Kentwood Police Department would never make these requests of anyone.

If you receive a call like this, under no circumstance meet or give money to the caller or provide any personal information. Instead, hang up and contact the department directly at 616.698.6580.

The caller may be spoofing phone numbers, making it appear the calls are legitimate from the Police Department, but they are not. Spoofing is when a legitimate number appears in a person’s caller ID, but the call is actually from someone trying to pull a scam.
