Sgt. Jeff DeJonge is celebrating his 25-year anniversary with the City’s Public Safety Department this month. Sgt. DeJonge started his law-enforcement career with part-time positions while attending Grand Valley State University. After graduation in 1997, he was hired full-time in East Grand Rapids and was promoted to Sergeant in 2019. He enjoys the variety of police, fire and medical duties in our integrated Public Safety Department and being able to assist people when they need help.
Sgt. DeJonge is the department’s computer and cell phone forensics expert and oversees the radar equipment and enforcement training for fellow officers. Off duty, he is the director of the Kent County Toys for Tots campaign, an organization he has worked with for over 20 years.
When asked what he’d like residents to know about his job, Sgt. DeJonge offered two thoughts. First, don’t be afraid to approach officers because they’re here to help or answer your questions. And second, please lock your homes and vehicles to prevent theft—it’s the easiest thing you can do to make sure your possessions and homes aren’t tampered with or stolen.
Thank you for 25 years of service to our citizens!
