On Feb. 13, Jim Saalfed announced that he will be resigning from office as county commissioner in Kent County.
As a longtime commissioner, Saalfed stated that he will be leaving his seat Sunday, March 15. Saalfed was first placed into office by the body in 2010 and served as chairman with the board of commissioners from 2016 to 2018.
He states that his days in office are coming to an end due to his involvement as CEO of nonprofit foundation Church Extension Fund. The duties as CEO would have taken time away and caused him to miss several meetings throughout the year as county commissioner. Saalfed said that he wanted to sit out the additional nine months of his two-year term but it didn't work out that way, as reported by MLive. His service to the public will not be ending.
The county is now required to find a replacement by Wednesday, April 15.
