MASON COUNTY, MI – Divers are looking for the body of a man who did not resurface after falling from a boat on Hamlin Lake.
Mason County sheriff’s deputies responded to a call around 1:05 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, of a capsized boat in an area of the lake known as “the narrows.”
Witnesses reported two people in the water.
The sheriff’s Marine Patrol, Ludington police and Hamlin Township Fire and Rescue responded with boats.
Rescuers learned that the boat had not capsized but one of two who fell in the water could not be found. A woman who fell in the water was rescued by other boaters.
A 54-year-old man went under but did not resurface.
Police believe that the two were on an 18-foot bass-style boat when they fell in. Police said it is unclear how they wound up in the water.
Mason County Victim’s Services was on scene with the missing man’s family.
Sheriff’s divers from Mason and Oceana counties were looking for the victim. A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter was also used in the search. Area fire departments and state police also responded.
The missing man’s name was not released. He is not a resident of Mason County, sheriff’s deputies said.
