In the midst of the most dramatic rise in cases and hospitalizations that Michigan has seen during the COVID-19 pandemic, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has imposed new restrictions and measures designed to stop the spread.

However, many argue about the effectiveness of these measures and whether they do more harm than good. The new restrictions will once again burden businesses around the state that have already been struggling to handle the challenges posed by the closures and restrictions. 

The Mackinac Center for Public Policy has issued a statement on these measures and given guidance as to what measures they believe would be better suited for dealing with the pandemic. 

Lindsay Killen, vice president for strategic outreach & communications at the Mackinac Center, commented on the statement, "The focus in Michigan has been on limiting what citizens can do. But there is something else that government can do -- get out of the way. Earlier this year, Gov. Whitmer smartly rolled back 'Certificate of Need' regulations on medical providers and licensing rules on workers. The state should suspend laws that limit hospitals and workers to help Michigan fight the virus."

The new restrictions are almost certain to be followed by lawsuits involving the Michigan State Supreme Court, Republican legislators and the governor's office.
